Culture Shock

It will be a while before my desktop is functional again so I’ll have to make do with this poor beleaguered tablet.

I went upriver yesterday for the first time in 2 months. The loneliness of Maine drivers was a distant memory before the first truck attached itself to my bumper. 🙂

I was surprised when I got to St. Stephen …. lots of traffic (compared to the Island and Lubec) and people on the streets. It felt really alien.

When I got to the Superstore I found the parking lot 70% full. Some of them must have been the extra workers hired to deal with phone orders and pickup. Still there were 2 or 3 people in every aisle.

Sadly, I must report that a young friend of mine died last week from Covid 19. I don’t know how she contracted it..

I knew Uccie for years online but we had never met in the real world. Now, we never will.

I was the only person in the store wearing a mask yesterday and you know what? I didn’t feel self conscious or over-dressed. If anybody had asked I would have told them about my friend.

It’ll be a long time before I do another trip. The freezer and pantry are full again and daily needs can be met locally. I’ll feel safer on this rock. 🙂

  1. I too, feel safer here than anywhere although I have ventured to Lubec a handful of times. I am so sorry about your friend. I am afraid that lots of people don’t take this seriously. You won’t see me upriver anytime soon. xo
