Imagine If ….

Yes, I’m back πŸ™‚ The desktop died last spring, the tablet came to a screeching halt in December, and there was no way I was going to try and write a post on a *($^@^$& phone. A good friend of mine, who has an overwhelming need to “get things done”, was frustrated enough with my lack of online presence to gift me with the means necessary to get a new computer. It will take a long time for me to come to terms with this generosity, but “gift horses” and all that. I’m over the moon!

It would probably be embarrassing if I thought people could see me jumping up and down, or emitting excited utterances, as I get her set up and enjoy her abilities. One of the aspects of this desktop I didn’t anticipate being so pleasurable was just the ability to once again use a full sized keyboard. There are wires everywhere, I have a lot of setup left to complete, but I’m in Heaven. πŸ™‚

One of the downsides to not having a working tower was that I couldn’t download images from my camera. So at the start of the pandemic, for example, I couldn’t share an image of one of the Cruise Ships from far away which came and parked in Eastport for an extended period. I believe the Riviera’s usual habitat is more mediterranean.

I managed to get everything off the camera and onto the computer and then went through them. I have to be more disciplined about deleting shite, and duplicates, but mostly shite. There was a lot of that. I have some for today and some I can use for stories I’m planning, but now I can go back to photo expeditions and new shite. πŸ™‚

I tried to share some updates with the tablet (poor thing) but I’ll do better this year. You’re lucky to have missed the final judgment on the Lobster Season (meh) and the politics surrounding the Scallop Harvest. Honestly, you get any identifiable groups, even if they’re just tiny locations within a supposedly homogenous geographical area, and you get politics.

I did learn something recently I’d like to share and it has nothing to do with fishing. My background doesn’t include any experience with or knowledge of metal roofs. There are a number of them on the Island, a few on houses near me.

Last week we had an ice storm. Not a big one, but things were pretty decently coated. The next day it was sunny and I went out to get some firewood when I heard some strange noises. It took me a while to figure it out. It seems that (obviously) the sun heats the metal roof. This does not melt the ice. It causes the ice to explode … loudly, violently, and in all directions. Wow! Note to self: do not park near or walk next to a metal roof after an ice storm.

I’ve tried to convey some idea of my level of joy associated with being once more in front of a screen that is connected to the rest of the world. As much as I love this Island, the people, and my life, there is a large part of me that needs the external reach that is once again mine.

My friends here do not understand. They can’t see why it’s important to me or why I’m so excited about this. I finally had to do the following:

  • Me: Imagine you’re getting that shiny new pickup today.
  • Them: Eyes light up.
  • Me: Now, imagine you’re also getting that new boat you want today.
  • Them: Now really excited.
  • Me: You are part way to understanding how I feel.

I have more work to do before the installation is complete and tidied up. It’s going to be a good day. πŸ™‚

  1. WB, as we say “inworld.” πŸ™‚ I’ve missed your posts. I also live in fear of a dying computer. I had a backup laptop that is now dead. I don’t have a smart phone. And the desktop is doing these random blue screen of death crashes. So, I feel the pain you must have been under, and hellyeah! accepting generousity can be twitchy at times, but… how wonderful for you and for the friend who was able to make you happy-happy. New computer is way better than a boat. β™₯
