The first image was taken on a sunny, mostly clear, day. That wasn’t possible this morning – it’s cloudy and foggy and there is a lot of rain coming. They say snow for the northern part of the Province and then moving south, but I doubt that will reach us.
A lot of work is being done to change the focus from scallop fishing to more Spring-like pursuits. A few boats are still ranging far to try to get some more of the little darlings – the rest of the boats have started to switch out the rigging.
Trap buoys are appearing in advance of the Lobster Season – the new design/new ropes, introduced recently as part of regulations aimed at saving Right Whales, are decorating wharves in advance of the actual piles of traps we’ll see in the near future.
At the same time, boats intending to shutoff herring in the various coves are laying out their twine to do whatever repairs are necessary. I haven’t been everywhere so it might be that stakes and poles are arriving for the newly planned weirs – they just haven’t been where I have. ๐
More changes are coming up for the Island. This might sound like a dumb thing to say – after all, change is a part of life. At least it is for the rest of the world. This place, however, is pretty static.
The largest of our two grocery outlets is changing hands at the beginning of April. I’m going to miss the current owner (and his cats) – both he and his wife were very good to me when I first moved here. He will be much happier once he can rejoin his partner (and the rest of the cats) out west and I wish them all well.
The new owners will have a steep learning curve and I sincerely wish them success. I like this couple too and I’m sure they’ll make changes, and I’m sure they’ll get flack – but anybody who goes into retail is probably prepared for that.
The only transitions I can report on the home front involve getting lighter-weight jackets out of their winter storage. It is way too early to start thinking about changing from flannel sheets. ๐
I have started tiny spring cleaning jobs. The only major one which will be tackled now is the garage in anticipation of a new season of splitting & stacking wood.
I’m thinking I might buy myself new secateurs (clippers) and loppers as a Spring treat. My original intention was to buy new glasses (which will be progressives, not transitions, but they almost fit in to the theme of this post). That will still happen – eventually. Maybe during the next change of seasons. ๐
Thanks for your posts . Nice pictures ! Dar
