One of Those Weeks

We had some more warm weather and dead calm seas so, of course, Friday arrived with another freezing rain/snow storm. That’s three weeks in a row.

I was going to post a few days ago but forgot to take my camera on one excursion. Thursday I neglected to replace the dead battery. Yesterday I remembered both and got some bleh photos of trees to accompany what (I’m sure) would have been a fascinating diatribe about firewood. Then I arrived home.

I got out of my friend’s truck with the dog under my left arm, the camera strap in my left hand, and closed the heavy truck door with my right. Unfortunately I neglected to remove all of my right thumb before slamming it shut.

I’m very proud of myself for not dropping either the dog or the camera as I used my left hand to open the door to release that aforementioned digit.

I was speaking to a friend on the phone later who guessed that I probably used a lot of bad language at that point and I could honestly tell her that the only thing I said was a very loud “Owwwwwwwwwwww”. My face obviously said a great deal more because the driver ended his phone call quickly saying “she’s shut her hand in the door”, got out and started bossing me around. (typical)

I was carted off to the Clinic in spite of pointing out that they don’t do Urgent Care – luckily for them they didn’t have a patient at the time. Nothing is broken – just black and sprained and swollen and very painful. I refused (and continue to refuse) all attempts to take me to various hospitals.

The person who was on the other end of the phone when I did the deed brought me ice, I’ve made a nest around my recliner, and my pain killers are proving their usefulness. In addition, I am reminded of the value of opposable thumbs. I can also ignore almost all the chores around here without guilt. I’ll try and do better next week. 🙂

  1. Poor you! Hope it gets better swiftly. But yes, you need to avoid chores until you are absolutely sure you’ve fully recovered. Gentle stroking of whatever animals offer themselves sounds like excellent alternative exercise.
